Legal Observing for Protests

On August 13, 2020, Kevin Truitt from the Ohio Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild gave a talk covering the NLG’s legal observer program. The purpose of this program is to document, monitor, and observe law enforcement at local political demonstrations, rallies, marches, and protests and hold them accountable. NLG legal observers work to support the Movement for Black Lives and other grassroots, radical, leftist movements and causes. The legal observer program is part of mass defense, which includes jail support, criminal defense, and civil rights litigation, all of which is meant to protect the First Amendment rights of organizers and community members.
